The ACLU of New Jersey seeks a creative and dynamic team player with finance and human resources experience to fill the position of Finance and Human Resources Manager.
This is a full-time, newly created position. As the ACLU-NJ grows, we seek to maximize our potential in terms of financial strength, people power, and impact. The Finance and Human Resources Manager will report directly to the Executive Director and will work collaboratively with the Executive Assistant, the Office and Technology Manager, and department heads to oversee the organization’s financial and human resources operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Human Resources: Oversee/perform human resource functions, which includes recruiting, hiring and separation, onboarding, retention, benefits, performance evaluations and other related administrative necessities. Assist with developing and maintaining a human resource information system that meets the organization's personnel information needs. Work with key staff members and employee-led working groups to develop and implement best policies, procedures and practices on personnel matters. Help resolve conflicts. Maintain compliance with federal, state and local regulations and laws pertaining to personnel matters. Remain up-to-date on HR trends in the corporate and non-profit worlds. Assist the management team in communicating changes in personnel policies and procedures to employees. Periodically review and update salary bands in consultation with the Executive Director.
+ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Work with staff to help promote diversity and racial equity internally. Research and coordinate trainings, consultants, and other resources for ACLU-NJ staff, as we become more deliberate and intentional about weaving racial equity into our thinking in every decision made. Work with the Executive Director and relevant committees of the Board of Trustees to ensure equity in compensation and benefits across the organization. Promote a lively, welcoming, and inclusive office culture and assist in creating space for reflection and conversation.
+ Professional Development: Work with the Executive Director and department heads to find internal and external opportunities for staff of all departments and levels to continue to build skills. Work with the Executive Director to develop opportunities for career growth wherever possible.
+ Financial Management, Accounting, and Compliance: Oversee/perform essential financial functions such as maintaining financial accounts, bill processing, and payroll, including oversight and collaboration with external bookkeepers and auditors. Gather information for the auditor to prepare all tax filings and the annual audit. Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, and local, state, and federal regulations and laws.
+ Budget Planning and Monitoring: In coordination with the Executive Director and the management team, oversee aspects of annual budget preparation and implementation, including ongoing budget monitoring, analysis and cash-flow reporting. Develop and implement efficient and thorough internal processes for planning and monitoring, and for the collection of useful financial information and other metrics for management decisions.
+ Financial stewardship: Work with the Development Department to perform monthly and annual reconciliation with ACLU National. Track and prompt grant reporting. Develop and implement thorough and efficient internal processes to maximize our financial potential.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a team player with a demonstrated commitment to advancing racial justice in the workplace. We seek a professional with nonprofit finance and HR experience. Requirements include:
+ Significant experience and training in key areas relevant to the duties and responsibilities above;
+ A strong commitment to equity and inclusion in the workplace, dismantling white supremacy, and incorporating a structural power analysis into work, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances;
+ Work experience that demonstrates professionalism, ability to exercise good judgment, and ability to responsibly handle highly confidential information such as financial statements and personnel records;
+ Strong interpersonal communication skills, an exceptional degree of empathy, and ability to have difficult conversations;
+ Strong financial management skills including experience in budget planning and implementation, skill in reading and analyzing financial statements, and a proficiency in accounting practices;
+ Ability to translate financial concepts clearly in writing and verbally for those less familiar with them;
+ Strong attention to detail, work ethic, and problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn new skills as needed;
+ Ability to work beyond 9 a.m.-5 p.m. as needed; Ability and willingness to travel throughout New Jersey, and occasionally to other states for conferences and training;
+ Ability to work on multiple projects and see them through in a fast-paced environment, work collaboratively, and prioritize effectively;
+ Professionalism, diplomacy, and kindness.
The ACLU-NJ offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and in line with the ACLU-NJ compensation scale.
