Who You Are
You’re an advocate, a problem solver, and a creative thinker. You have a knack for looking at all the details and finding an alternative solution to a problem, and you welcome a challenge. You’re a trusted partner who is always willing to jump in and help others (within and outside your team). Your communication and follow-through are second to none. If this describes you, please continue.
Who We Are
Ash Brokerage is an insurance brokerage general agency (BGA). (Not to brag, but we’re actually the largest privately owned BGA in the country.) If you’re in the business, then you know how a BGA works. If you’re not, here goes: A BGA works with financial professionals who sell insurance, such as independent agents, financial planners or registered investment advisors. Those advisors come to us with information about their clients, then we check out multiple carriers and product options to help find the best solutions to fit their needs. That’s what we do in a nutshell … but, there’s so much more!
Yes, we’re in the insurance business, but we’re out to change the perception of what our industry does. Really, we’re less of a sales organization and more a partner to provide peace of mind. On the Underwriting, we’re proud to play a vital part in the insurance process. We take our responsibility to heart, knowing everything we do helps protect the lives of others. No matter the case, we’re always looking for ways to make life (insurance) easier for everyone involved.
What You’ll Do
As the Sr. Underwriter, you’ll serve as an advocate between our internal team members, agents/brokers and insurance carriers for life insurance applications. The majority of your time, approximately 70%, will be spent doing case review, positioning, summaries, and negotiation, with the balance spend on pre-sale consultation, training and personal development, and team projects. To be successful, you will have to:
- Successfully deliver competitive outcomes by applying your underwriting and product experience;
- Produce holistic case-by-case solutions that incorporate all the dynamics of risk assessment (medical, lifestyle, non-medical, financial) in a multi-carrier brokerage environment;
- Review/summarize lifestyle, medical, non-medical, and financial data to accurately and thoroughly evaluate/classify/rate each risk to determine insurability and targeted carriers based on sale goals to ultimately drive the best possible outcomes on informal and formal life insurance applications;
- Identify and address underwriting challenges within life applications/questionnaires, lab results, exams and medical records to include advanced medical testing (MRIs, cardiac testing, pathology reports, PFTs, etc.);
- Consult with agents/brokers, internal staff, insurance companies, Ash Medical Director, physicians/medical facilities, paramed companies, laboratories or inspection companies to gather additional information to favorably position risks;
- Apply knowledge and experience to provide consistent and accurate advice on pre-sale inquiries;
- Ability to work in a team focused environment with willingness to contribute beyond your own assigned workload to support overall success of our underwriting department;
- When necessary, engage the expertise of Senior Underwriters in case consultations and discussions to facilitate mentor/mentee initiatives which foster skillset strengthening;
What You Need
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, medical or life sciences, or a related field
- 5 years of underwriting experience
- Additional industry accredited education (LOMA, ALU, CLU) is a plus.
- Prior experience in life insurance case management is a plus.

- Prior exposure to multi-facet underwriting to include medical, lifestyle, non-medical, and financial considerations is a plus.
- Prior experience in, or ability to learn, appropriate use of online reinsurance manuals, carrier specific manuals, crediting/table-shave programs, and published guidelines is a plus.
