The Position:
IHMEC is searching for a leader who will work closely with the VP of Finance and Operations on the management and execution of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, inventory, compliance, reporting, and certain Museum operations. Through the demonstration of leadership skills, the Accounting Manager will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the operations of the Museum. The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring strong financial controls, improving efficiencies, managing the audit, providing timely and accurate grant reports and quarterly financial reports, all while inspiring and growing the skills of the team and others. The successful candidate must work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced and multi-faceted environment and facilitate a positive, collaborative, and innovative culture. This individual will bring poise and diplomacy to their interactions with colleagues, donors, visitors, Board members, and all other members of the IHMEC community.
Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Accounting:
- Manage compliance with accounting standards including a strong internal control environment to uphold the integrity of the financial statements and safeguard assets.
- Oversee and execute accounting operations: revenue (contributions/grants, tickets, memberships), accounts payable, fixed assets, investments, payroll, accruals, revenue recognition, tax reporting, account reconciliations, and quarterly financial reporting.
- Manage compliance with grant requirements, including procurement, accounting, and reporting on government grants and contracts, as well as contributions and grants from private donors and foundations.
- Establish policies, procedures, and direction for continuous improvement of operations, including identifying and managing system upgrades and implementations.
- Manage inventory accuracy and valuation and cost of goods sold accounting in concert with the gift shop personnel.
- Train and cross-train staff on accounting processes and reporting, continuously building skills and expertise of the team.
- Lead the preparation and management of the annual audit, including Single Audit in years in which government funding meets the threshold.
- Manage employee benefit participation and reconciliation between payroll, invoicing, and benefit carrier.
- Manage preparation and filing of various tax returns and compliance filings (1099s, Sales Tax, 990) and other financial surveys.
- Work across the organization to build a strong understanding of operations, programs, revenue sources, and processes. Using knowledge of the Museum operations and business acumen, work with the VP of Finance and Operations to strategically develop budgets, forecasts, and quarterly financial reporting to support the growth of the impact of the Museum.
- Support Board and Board Committee meetings with various reporting and analysis.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Operations:
- Manage admissions and attendance reporting.
- Act as “Manager on Duty” for the Museum on occasion, supporting volunteers, gift shop, security, admissions, facilities teams.
- Facilitate shared information across departments for managing daily Museum events and field trips.
- Manage administrative functions, including supply ordering, main phone line management, incoming/outgoing mail and shipments.
- Support HR administration management.
- Collaborate with management team in supporting a positive, thriving, and innovative culture.
Minimum Job Qualifications

- Degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA a plus.
- Minimum 4 years of accounting and management experience; 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Not-for-profit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Proficient in the use of technology including advanced use of excel for data analytics and automating processes and experience with Quickbooks.
- Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, Board or other outside partners
